Activities to do With Family This Summer

Summer is fast approaching. Over here, we are having great weather. It was 30 degrees yesterday! The kids are probably going to be out of school soon, so we decided to round up some Summer activities to do in Calgary this summer. If you don't live here fear not! These activities can be done in any city.

Fun, Simple Family Activities

Splash Park

I love the splash park for my four year old. As a parent, you can spend the day under the shade while your little one splashes around with other kids. There are great water gun structures and sprinklers at local parks in Calgary. Our favourite ones are Prairie Winds splash park and the one close to Prince's Island Park downtown.

Family Picnic

When I was younger my mom would take my brother, sister and I to a park, set up a blanket, and give us lunch. It was pretty simple, but it turned out to be a great memory. When you are young, you don't realize that the simple things are the best things in life!

This summer consider taking your kids to a playground or city park and rolling out the blanket under a big tree. You will get to relax and read a book while they eat and play.

Don't forget to take a ball or other toys along with you!

Grow a Garden

One of the best things to do with kids or grandkids is to grow a garden. Gardening helps children become responsible for a living thing AND see nature in action. I find that gardening is a great way to teach my children that food doesn't come from a grocery store. There are lots of farmers around the world that make it possible for us to eat!

Go Camping (in the Backyard)

If you are anything like me then you don't like being away from civilization (warm showers and Wifi) for too long! That is why camping out in the backyard is a great alternative to full out camping with the kids. When it gets too cold or too spooky for your little ones you can whip up some hot chocolate or head back to a familiar bed. If you don't have a tent camp in the back of your SUV or truck. You and I both know children have imagination for DAYS. They will believe you are anywhere :)

Blow Bubbles

Okay, I know that this sounds super simple, but bear with me. My daughter can spend HOURS in the backyard blowing and catching bubbles. There is something so magical about them. They just float in the wind. How cool! Get your self an arsenal of bubbles and prepare those lungs. You will be entertaining your child or grandchild all afternoon with these simple spheres.
