#WCW Rebecca Mvundura

Meet Rebecca!

Please let us know a little bit about yourself

I am a recent graduate from Mount Royal University with a degree in Sociology and Women's Studies. I am currently job hunting with the hopes of getting into the non-profit sector. My passion for women and community work influenced  my decision to start the Sister 2 Sister Women's Association of Calgary. I feel so blessed to be able to do something i love and am passionate about. I have an amazing supportive network in my family, partner and friends. In my spare time i love to cook, dine out, read and take naps :).

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN THIS CAUSE/LINE OF WORK/CAREER?

I was originally a psychology major and I took one women's studies course and fell in love!!

I then switched my major to Sociology and my minor to women's studies. From that, my passion for women and women's issues grew. In 2013 I decided to start an association in Calgary that catered to women of color. I felt that there was a need in this city to address some of the unique challenges we face and create a supportive network for us to connect and empower each other.

WHAT IS THE MOST FULFILLING PART OF YOUR WORK?

Being able to meet and connect with some really amazing women that are in various industries. Its been great to hear their stories and share experiences and just create a network of positive sisterhood . The wonderful thing is these women are not only successful in their respective fields, but they give back to the community as well and are all about empowering their fellow sisters in the process.

HOW DO YOU BALANCE WORK, FAMILY, AND OTHER COMMITMENTS?

It can be challenging that's for sure. I realized taking care of myself first (getting sleep, exercise, nourishing by body and soul) allows me to balance everything else.

WHAT IS SOMETHING PEOPLE WOULD BE SURPRISED TO KNOW ABOUT YOU?

I have really bad stage fright.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH YOUR FAMILY?

My family are my best friends!! From my parents, to my sister to my cousins! They are my support network and also call me out when I get out of line.

WHAT IS YOUR GREATEST ACCOMPLISHMENT?

Falling in love with myself and believing in myself. I have been able to do so much much more with my life personally and professionally when I became my own hero borrowed from (Lisa Nichols).

WHAT IS YOUR GREATEST FAILURE AND WHAT DID YOU LEARN FROM IT?

Taking on too much and not knowing my limits. I was so eager to try and meet standards set by other people, that I lost sight of myself and my purpose. Now I always ask myself why am I do this? Who am I doing it for? I think asking those questions as you journey through life help to keep things in perspective and in line with your purpose.
the eagle means focus and determination

WHAT WERE YOU DOING 5 YEARS AGO? WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU HAVE FOR YOURSELF AT THAT TIME?

5 years ago I was not serious about life at all. I didn't have a purpose and I wasn't living my truth. Advice I'd give myself would be know your worth and don't waste your time on people that don't value you.

WHERE DO YOU WANT TO BE IN 5 YEARS? HOW DO YOU THINK YOU WILL GET THERE?

In 5 years I just hope I'm still living with purpose and living a fulfilling life surrounded by people I love. I hope to continue to be a community activist and feminist rock-star.

WHAT PIECE OF LIFE ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE WHO SAYS THEY WANT TO FOLLOW IN YOUR FOOTSTEPS?

Life is a journey and not a race. Never compare yourself to another.Your story is unique and powerful.

DO YOU HAVE GENERAL LIFE ADVICE?

Live with purpose, don't lose faith and pray always.
