Stampede Style - Stampede Outfit Ideas for This Year

The Calgary Stampede is just around the corner! Right now, most of us are trying to nail down the perfect Stampede style. Do we go classic with jeans and boots, or do we try something different?

If you aren’t sure what to wear, keep reading to see how six Calgary bloggers and stores are styling themselves for Stampede this year.

Calgary Stampede Style - The Calgary Way

If you aren't from Calgary, you may not be aware that the Calgary Stampede is a 10-day festival where people suspend reality and dress up like cowboys for a week. Most Calgarians consider Stampede to be Christmas in July.

The Calgary Stampede incorporates sporting events, live music, food, and entertainment. It really is the place to people watch and have a good time.

One of the best people watching spots is the Stampede grounds. But remember, while you are watching people, they are probably watching you too.

That is why choosing the right outfit is essential for this festival.

Where do you start with choosing your Stampede style?

It may seem like a daunting task to find the perfect Stampede outfit, but we asked a few local Calgarian bloggers and boutiques to share their personal Stampede style and summarized the trends we are seeing this year.

You can take inspiration from them, but remember that your style is all your own.

Top trends for Calgary Stampede Style and Fashion

Here is a list of the most popular Stampede styles and some Stampede style outfits that you can take inspiration from.

Fringe Fashion for Stampede

Fringe will forever and always be ‘in’ for Stampede. You can wear fringe bags, necklaces, vests, boots. You name it, we are sure it comes in fringe.

Fringe truly signifies the west. Throughout history, fringe has been a statement item. Fringe originated as a way of preventing a cut piece of fabric from unraveling when hemming was not used, but now it is a fashion statement. Source Wikipedia

Here is local artist Rebecca Willow Herzog Reid wearing a statement Alora Fringe Necklace with a cute vest and shorts. You can incorporate fringe into your Stampede fashion in so many ways.

A necklace is one way to do it, but a bag is another easy way to get great movement, and it is practical too!

Simple summer dresses

You can do so much with a simple summer dress. Unlike cowboy boots and hats, you can wear a simple dress all summer long.

On the grounds of the Stampede, it can get up to 35 degrees, so you want to wear a dress that will let you breathe. Spaghetti straps (do they still call them spaghetti straps?) are definitely the way to go when you are choosing a dress that will keep you cool and your tan lines under control.

These types of summer dresses shown by @salvedgefashion are versatile and have the western vibe that you are looking for.

A simple summer dress is easily transformed into the ultimate Stampede outfit with a pair of cowboy boots and a cute purse.

Cowboy Hats and Boots

Cowboy Hats

Is your outfit truly complete without a cowboy hat. I'm here to tell you that the answer is 'no.'

Stampede is all about playing up the Western style. It is a chance to embrace your inner cowgirl for a whole 10 days. Cowboy hats come in so many styles and colours that you are spoiled for choice.

Cowboy Boots

Are you really going to Stampede without cowboy boots?

Personally, I never go to Stampede with cowboy boots, but I do appreciate the people who rock them with enthusiasm. When you wear cowboy boots, you are showing a deep commitment to the spirit of the Stampede.

Pro Tip: Do NOT buy Stampede boots the day before going to Stampede. They need to be broken in. Trust me. You have been warned.

Where can I get cute cowboy hats and boots for Stampede?

If you are looking to change up your style and Instagram photos throughout Stampede, you probably don't want to splurge on a cowboy hat.

There are lots of reasonably priced cowboy hats on Stephen (8th Ave SW) that come in a variety of colors.

Last year, WINS [link] had $5 pink cowboy hats in pastel pink.

At this time of year, you can pop into almost any consignment store and find some great cowboy hats that are cute and reasonably priced.

Statement Earrings

If you still need to go to work during the day, but want to dress up a little for Stampede, you can wear some beaded fringe earrings.

Not only do they frame your face well, but they are the essence of Western-style: intricate beading, bold colours, and patterns.

Where can I get cool fringe earrings?

Well, luckily for you, Alora sells handmade fringe earrings online. You can pick them up in store, or we can ship them to you through Canada Post :)

Jean Bottoms - Cut Off Shorts and Blue Jeans

Cut-off Shorts

Light wash denim is it for Stampede.

You can make your own cut-off shorts with jeans from the thrift store or WINS. Here is a great tutorial on how to make your own Western Style cut-off shorts!

Making your own cut-off shorts is a great way to get into the Stampede spirit without investing too much into it.

Blue Jeans

Blue jeans are also a classic choice for Stampede. Just pair them with a t-shirt, cowboy boots and or hat, and you are in Stampede mode!

About Calgary Stampede

When is Calgary Stampede 2019?

The Calgary Stampede takes place

Friday, July 5th, 2019 to Sunday, July 14th, 2019

How much is it to get into the Stampede

Entrance to the Stampede grounds is $18 for adults and $9 for kids. Kids under 7 are free!

What should I bring to Stampede?

Bring a water bottle, hat, snacks (if you have kids) and comfortable shoes

Other places to wear your Stampede Outfit that isn't Stampede.

Going to Stampede can be exhausting. Walking around in the hot sun shoulder to shoulder with strangers isn't everyone's idea of fun, and we get that.

You may want to dress up for Stampede, but not do the Stampede thing. Here are some great alternatives to going to the Stampede grounds.

Grab a drink on 17th Avenue

Like I said before, you can get in some great people watching on 17th ave. And if you want people to see your sweet Stampede style, you want to go there and been seen!

The best part about 17th ave is that you don't have to pay to get into the bar and the drinks aren't overpriced (sorry Calgary Stampede, but we all know the drinks too expensive).

While you are there you can grab a bite to eat too!

Walk or bike along the river

The weather is excellent and there is nothing better than enjoying the great outdoors.

You can stop off at Prince's Island Park or walk all the way to St. Patrick's island and have a picnic under the lovely trees.

There are always food trucks along the river, and like, 17th Ave excellent opportunities for people watching.

Visit Market Collective

This year, Market collective is having a summer market at the St Louis Hotel.

You can show off your Stampede style on Instagram in front of the new murals and artwork that is being curated in the market.

While you are there, you can support local and enjoy great music, for free!
